MANGO TREE RESTAURANT REVIEW

So I was invited to a restaurant for a small celebration and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to combine hobby & interest ( Photography and writing). My Immediate thought when the name mango tree was mentioned would be mouth watering flavours delivered by the spices of the cultural Caribbean. However not with standing I discovered that it was a Thai Restaurant and one that can hold it's own in the world of original dishes and spices.

The meals were rich in flavours. It gave you a real taste of culture and effort in preparation. The atmosphere was busy with life, for social minded people or people who wanted a taste of Thailand, right here in London (Victoria).

The dish I actually remembered the most was called 'gaeng kiew wan' - (picture 4) Rich flavoured Curry with a choice of meat beef or prawns. Being my first time having Thai curry I anticipated indian curry with strong herbs and spices and a distinctive spicy taste that is often used to the describe the sensation of 'theres a party in my mouth.

The prawns had a soft, pleasing crunch that did the curry justice, honestly I often wonder how they make such good food so quickly. Lastly the curry simply put was light, rich in flavour, smooth texture and the dominance of coconut milk was awesome I love coconut so it an added bonus.

Lastly, The only problem I had with Mango tree was the idea that we must pay the tip. Not that we didn't want to but telling us we had to was a completely different story. we actually all had enough but we didn't realise that every time we asked for water it was an additional charge to the bill. It would have been easier if we were told these things out of common courtesy not demand.

  7. The food looks lovely but that's very naughty of them about the tipping and the extra charge for the water. I hope their food is very good because such practices put me off going to such establishments. I think more restuarants should be pulled up for such behaviour.

  8. Ok, lemme tell you something, FIRST of all I'm not a cheap bastard (lol) but charging for water, seriously, as it's a resturant im sure they must of had alcohol and unless it's bottled water you were given, charging for tap water is kinda illegal... and forcing tips on people is just sad, what if you thought they didn't warrant a tip?, You'd still have to pay right? Nonsense..

Lol now that we've got that cat out of the bag (meow) I wanna just say how damn nice those pics look.. i mean, as i haven't eaten yet, pic number 4 added on top of pic number 8 with pic 2 as a side sounds like heaven right now lol..

I agree with you about the name, not that its carribbean but the mouth watering flavour comes to mind.. They would have gotten more black people to come if they named it 'Watermelon Tree' though, it'd be world famous! You know us ethnic people loove watermelon.. (lool a bit of stereotypical humor there)

Overall though it looks interesting and tasty, i'd be happy to go there at some point, reminds me of a thai resturant in Luton, minus the whole water/tip problem. Plus the Luton Thai resturant isn't very inventive, i mean it's actually called, "Thai resturant" lol.

    Nice post.

  10. oooh looks so good, I love thai food. I have noticed that a lot in london recently, a 10% service charge. It really grates one me as usually the the restaurants where the staff haven't been as good as they should have been, and you are never told until the bill. ggrrr! Great pictures :) x

  11. I do like Thai food and this looks very nice, but I would have contested the tipping - this is not something we should be forced to pay and would put me off going there.
